DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a live poetry reading and music performance! with special guests: Genny Lim\, Clara Hsu\, and David Wong. The event will take place in the gallery located on the second floor of the Minnesota Street Project.\n\n\n\nClara Hsu is a Chinese American immigrant from Hong Kong. She is a mother\, piano teacher\, traveler\, actor\, translator\, poet\, playwright\, a BMI (Broadcast Music\, Inc.) artist and a recipient of the Jefferson Award for public service in 2021. Clara’s children’s play\, The Piano\, a Play-Movie was selected to screen at the 2021 International Children’s Film Festival Seattle. Gai Mou Sou Rap is Clara’s best known work. Written in 2021 during the height of hate crimes against Asians\, the rap has received over a quarter of a million views on the internet and the Palm Beach International Music Award.\n\n\n\nGenny Lim was San Francisco Jazz Poet Laureate (2016-2018) and a recipient of the PEN Oakland Reginald Lockett and Berkeley Poetry Festival Lifetime Achievement Awards. Her award-winning play Paper Angels has been produced throughout the U.S.\, in Canada and China. She is author of five poetry collections\, Winter Place\, Child of War\, Paper Gods and Rebels\, KRA!\, La Morte Del Tempo\, and co-author of Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island\, winner of the American Book Award. Lim has collaborated with numerous jazz musicians such as Max Roach\, Jon Jang\, Francis Wong and Del Sol String Quartet.\n\n\n\nDavid Wong\, Executive Director of Tranquil Resonance Studio\, brings his passion for the ancient traditions of China to every note he plays on both guqin and guzheng and every cup of tea he brews. This public event presents featured artists through 25-min talks followed by 15-min Q&As. It’s held every last Wednesday of the month and free! RSVP today! \nAbout the artists\nClara Hsu is a piano teacher\, actor\, poet and playwright. She is the director of Clarion Performing Arts Center. In 2019 Clara established Clarion Summer Theater. She produced Love on the Magpie Bridge to celebrate the Chinese Night of Sevens Festival. Her second play\, The Piano\, a Play-Movie was selected by the 2021 Children’s Film Festival Seattle. Her new play\, Neil Armstrong at the Moon Palace will premiere at the end of this summer. Clara won the Jefferson Award for public service in May\, 2021. Her latest work\, the Gai Mou Sou Rap has gone viral on YouTube. \nTom Skalak joined the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation in 2018 as Senior Advisor to Clara Wu Tsai. The Foundation makes philanthropic investments in science\, economic mobility\, and cultural production (art\, music\, film)\, with a vision to produce transformative impact on societal well-being and sustainability. Tom is Vice President for Research Emeritus at the University of Virginia and was previously the founding Executive Director of The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group in Seattle\, the Microsoft co-founder’s global science investing group. In these roles\, Tom led creative synthesis of research and innovation programs spanning biosciences\, environmental sustainability\, physical sciences\, engineering and technology\, arts\, design\, and humanities. Tom was educated as a bioengineer at The Johns Hopkins University (B.E.S. 1979) and the University of California\, San Diego (Ph.D. 1984)\, was a Resident Artist at the Djerassi Resident.

SUMMARY:Love on the Magpie Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Clara Hsu’s first poetic play\, Love on the Magpie Bridge\, was written for the players of Clarion Performing Arts Center’s Summer Theater\, 2019. Based on a Chinese legend known in the celebration of Qixi (Night of Sevens) festival\, the play incorporated an ancient poem\, a popular folk song\, an art song and many classical and folk tunes played on the guzheng by David Wong. With an intergenerational cast the play was performed on August 5\, 7 and 11 to the delight of the San Francisco Bay Area community. This year\, Night of Sevens falls on August 25. Let us celebrate the festival of women\, domestic skills and Mother Nature by watching together this fun and magical play on Youtube!

SUMMARY:High Mountains Flowing Water: Chinese classical music\, poetry and paintings
DESCRIPTION:This is a “Cultured Gathering 雅集” that explores the scholarly arts inspired by China’s high mountains and flowing water with poetry\, guzheng and guqin music and a visual guide through landscape paintings. \nTranquil Resonance Studio explores this connection between man and nature in ancient China with a brief introduction into landscape painting’s development and masters\, poetry invoking the natural environment around the scholars and music that expressed the movement and changes of nature. \nGuqin and guzheng performance by David Wong and Bonnie Lee\, directors of Tranquil Resonance studio and its members. Poet Clara Hsu will read poetry by ancient masters in Chinese and English translations.

SUMMARY:Love on the Magpie Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Love on the Magpie Bridgeis a poetic drama thatcombines poetry\, music\, dance\, acting and games to tell the Chinese legend of the Weaver goddess and a Cowherd. Their love for each other angered the goddess’ mother. She separated the lovers by creating a river of stars. Only once a year the lovers may reunite\, thanks to the sacrifice of the cow god and the compassion and ingenuity of the magpies. \nNight of Sevens\, dated back 2600 years ago\, is celebrated on the Seventh day of the Seventh Month in the Chinese calendar. During this day\, fruits\, flowers and special cakes are prepared. Women go to the temples to pay respect to the Weaver Goddess and to plead for domestic skills. The cow god and the magpies are also honored as they played crucial roles in the legend. \nIn 2019 Night of Sevens falls on August 7. Love on the Magpie Bridgeprovides a mid-year cultural reflection on the connection between human and nature and reverence for our animal friends. \nOn Sunday August 11\, a costumed parade on the street will follow at the conclusion of the play. All are welcome! \nLove on the Magpie Bridgeis performed by the music students and friends of Clarion Performing Arts Center. The production is conceived\, written and produced by Clara Hsu.

SUMMARY:Poetry in Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:Four Chinese American poets come together for a dynamic reading on heritage and perspectives. They will be joined by Mike Taylor\, songwriter\, and Katie Taylor for a music interlude. Tickets are available at Eventbrite.com \nNellie Wong \nNellie is a member of various literary\, artistic\, and political groups\, including Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party. In 1989\, she received a Women of Words award from the San Francisco Women’s Foundation. With Mitsuye Yamada\, Nellie was the subject of the documentary Mitsuye & Nellie\, Asian American Poets (1981). Nellie’s poems have been installed in public sites in the San Francisco area. In 2011\, a building at Oakland High School was named after Wong. \nClara Hsu \nClara is the director of Clarion Performing Arts Center\, a non-profit charitable organization in San Francisco that provides music lessons\, workshops\, theater and music events. She leads a weekly poetry group at the On Lok Senior Center\, and is a member of the Grant Ave Follies\, a senior cabaret dance troupe that performs throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Clara incorporates poetry into the cabaret shows and dramatic elements in literary readings. She reads in English and Cantonese\, a dialect of the Chinese language. \nGenny Lim \nGenny is the author of the poetry collections Winter Place (1989)\, Child of War (2003)\, and Paper Gods and Rebels (2013); the children’s book Wings for Lai-Ho (1982); and the plays Paper Angels (1978) and Bitter Cane (1989)\, among others. Her work appears in The Politics of Life: Four Plays by Asian American Women (1993)\, the Oxford Book of Women’s Writing in the United States (1995)\, and Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island (1980). Lim is the winner of the 1981 American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. In 1982\, she founded a theater company\, Paper Angels Productions\, now known as Theatre XX\, a company that performs experimental theater. Lim has taught at the New College of California\, and her papers are held at UC Santa Barbara. \nJeffrey Leong \nJeffrey is a poet and writer who worked as a public health administrator and attorney for the City of San Francisco. He earned his MFA in Writing at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is the author of Wild Geese Sorrow: The Chinese Wall Inscriptions at Angel Island\, the first new translation of this work in almost 40 years. His writing has focused on the Asian American experience including adoption\, multiracial families\, and student activism during the 1960s. He lives with his wife and daughter in the East Bay.
