SUMMARY:The Romance of Chinese Poetry and Guqin
DESCRIPTION:Poet Clara Hsu and Guqin master David Wong offer insights into the intricate relationship between word and music in ancient China. \nThey present Chinese classical poems in Cantonese (with English translation) with guqin music. The program includes a Guqin lament\, renowned duets from the Tang Dynasty\, and nature and tea poems. The presenters also share classical paintings that were part of classical literati expression. \nThe guqin\, a seven-stringed zither\, has been closely associated with poetry for more than 3000 years of Chinese history. The earliest poems to reference the qin are found in Shijing\, The Book of Songs\, from the 11th century BCE. The unique voice of the guqin delved into the soul of the poets and stirred their deepest feelings\, until word and music coalesced and all senses were elevated.

SUMMARY:The Piano--a play-movie
DESCRIPTION:The Piano is a fantasy-adventure theatrical play written by Clara Hsu for the students of Clarion Summer Theater\, 2020.  The play is based on Clara’s knowledge and experience as a child growing up in her father’s piano factory in Hong Kong. \nPlayers ages 10 to 16 met frequently on zoom to rehearse. They learned to act\, dance and sing. Then each player was filmed individually at Clarion Performing Arts Center. The footage was creatively edited together by Brent Benaway. We’re proud to present to you “The Piano 2020 — a Play Movie” \nThe Piano is produced as a testament of tenacity and creativity of the human spirit. It was so for Mr. Ma\, the piano manufacturer. It is so today\, for all of us in the time of Coronavirus.

SUMMARY:Love on the Magpie Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Love on the Magpie Bridgeis a poetic drama thatcombines poetry\, music\, dance\, acting and games to tell the Chinese legend of the Weaver goddess and a Cowherd. Their love for each other angered the goddess’ mother. She separated the lovers by creating a river of stars. Only once a year the lovers may reunite\, thanks to the sacrifice of the cow god and the compassion and ingenuity of the magpies. \nNight of Sevens\, dated back 2600 years ago\, is celebrated on the Seventh day of the Seventh Month in the Chinese calendar. During this day\, fruits\, flowers and special cakes are prepared. Women go to the temples to pay respect to the Weaver Goddess and to plead for domestic skills. The cow god and the magpies are also honored as they played crucial roles in the legend. \nIn 2019 Night of Sevens falls on August 7. Love on the Magpie Bridgeprovides a mid-year cultural reflection on the connection between human and nature and reverence for our animal friends. \nOn Sunday August 11\, a costumed parade on the street will follow at the conclusion of the play. All are welcome! \nLove on the Magpie Bridgeis performed by the music students and friends of Clarion Performing Arts Center. The production is conceived\, written and produced by Clara Hsu.

SUMMARY:Eves at the Beat
DESCRIPTION:During Women’s History month a constellation of events brought together a group of fabulous womxn+ writers. The meeting of these hearts and minds exploded into something powerful and a new monthly reading series concept was born\, “Eves at the Beat”. \nJoin us for our July event\, curated by Nicole Noel\, Thursday July 11th\, 2019 at 7:30pm. \nNOTE: This event is normally on first Thursdays\, but has been moved to the second Thursday of July to accommodate the holiday. \nJuly lineup as follows:\nShizue Seigel\nAnanda Esteva\n@Aquileia Lewis\nAries JPoeticgoddess\nNatasha Dennerstein\nJanice Blaze Rocke\nGina Goldblatt\nClara Hsu \n“Eves at the Beat” is a monthly first Thursday reading series at The Beat Museum with occasional readings in Kerouac Alley featuring womxn and non-binary people. Each first Thursday there will be a new curator and MC invited from the previous month. This will give many people the opportunity to step into these roles and make the culture of the readings more equitable and circular\, rather than hierarchal. \nThis is a donation based event. We will pass a hat so bring a contribution for the readers. \nWe will also be accepting packages of dry goods\, new socks\, and sanitary items for the local homeless community.
